I've been thinking about it for a while, but had the hermits to look after and couldn't justify it. I saw some Blood Shrimp at the weekend (marine shrimp) which set me off, but have done my research but decided to go for freshwater as it is simpler to keep for a noobie like me.

I'll post some pictures when I get them (the tank is cycling for a few days first).

Anyone had anything similar - had experience in keeping freshwater fish - any tips you can share?

Hello,

Mossman I used to have a freshwater tank small one fille wiht many live aquatic plants and cherry shrimp, but had to give them up as I was moving Guests cannot see images in posts. Also a tip- use Wood as it is very good for shrimp tanks, expecially bogwood and soak it for a few days to reduce any impact on water quality also it provides places for shrimp to hide and for algae and bacteria to grow. It also looks really nice with MOSSES lol and java fern Guests cannot see images in posts. Please register by clicking here to see images.

Thanks Guys

HCK - sorry you had to give it up! I've got some bog wood and a couple of plants. I'll try and get some moss and ferns to help out, thanks! It's only a 10l tank but it looks pretty cool!

Should give me something to look at while the Hermies are asleep!

*edit* it's a 23l tank! My bad!!
Mine used ot be a 30l tank with a small light on top, but shrimp really odnt need light, also remember ammonia and nitrites are very harmful for dwarf shrimp a tiny bit of it will decrease your numbers of shrimp and the filter has to have a gentel flow as a powerfl one will turn some into shrimp paste lol also what substrate you using? I use to use Eco-Complete
I'm using standard aquarium gravel only.

What is Eco-Complete?
Eco complete is a live planted substrate which aids the growth of live aquatic plants and is nitrate free which is suitable for Dwarf shrimp Guests cannot see images in posts. Please register by clicking here to see images.
shrimps do love a well planted tank (trouble is the better planted it is the less u see them ) I used to have some of the see thru (I know theres me with another techie scientific description) fresh water shrimps one thing to watch they are quick and can easily jump out of nets also make sure you dont use any treatments that could contain traces of copper (Ie whitespot treatments etc) as these can be deadly to them

good luck will be vvv interested to see pics

take care

at the risk of looking like a complete idiot............ fresh water ...are we talking just ordinary water and not heated just filtered like you would keep a goldfish in or is it something more complicated?? ive still got that antique fish tank fill and i love the look of these shrimps!

ZiPpY x
Marcus - you used to have them - what happened? What was your experiences of keeping them like? (and were they caled 'glass' shrimp?)

Zippy you would never look like an idiot to me.... Guests cannot see images in posts. Please register by clicking here to see images.

Yes - freshwater is ordinary tap water (treated though, like dechlor). The filter I have built on the tank is bigger than a bog standard goldfish filter and I do have a heater in the water to get it to about 75 degrees.

They are more sensitive than most fish like goldfish, but if you have a good filter and some plants you should be good to go.

The whole set up for me was £100, but that was tank, filter, heater, light, gravel & plants & accessories. If you've got a tank you should be able to set up for about half that.

You should get some!! Guests cannot see images in posts. Please register by clicking here to see images.
