The vet has given him antibiotics but is not operating on him as he is 3. He said he still seems happy and to keep and eye on him. got to go back to the vets on saturday.

the same hes eating and carrying on as normal its his eye that just looks gross but he isnt bothered by any of it. he so tame and friendly he just comes and eats out of your hand the other one(JUNA ) I put the camera in their tank and he just climbed on it lol.
Berry went back to the vets for the 3rd time. Vet has said his eye looks worse which it does.he has given him a steriod/anti inflam injection. he has said if its no better he will put him to sleep next week. he is confused by him as Berry is very active and doesnt seem bothered by his yucky eye. I spoke to him about the other gerbil that shares with him.i said i think he might be trying to clean it. I have made the decision to separate them but this now means that they may never be able to share a gerbilarium again.
I think I have made the right decision.
it sounds like you have done whats best for your chappie, i havent ever kept gerbils so i cant offer a thought about the separation, but it does sound to me like you are doing all you can to make him comfortable and settled
what substrate do you use in the gerbilarium? one of my gerbils was having a problem with an irritated eye and at the time i was using woodshavings which can cause problems for lots of rodents I switched to using carefresh and his eye cleared up and no probs since its a little more expensive than shavings but worth it if it helps
take care and good luck with him
