Ok, I've picked up that "Calci-sand" is bad news from reading the forums, but I'm not 100% sure that what I've just poured in the crabitat isn't calci-sand...

How do I tell, and what damage does it do. Will it be ok for a couple of days until I order some good stuff in? Can I risk it?
what did it say on the packet? the problem with calci sand is that they ingest it and it solidifies internally - impacts- in theory the idea is good they eat it and gain much needed calcium but the reality is horrific if some of the pics i have seen on the web are anything to go by Guests cannot see images in posts. play sand (hard to get hold of in winter but not impossible - think argos still have it in) is the safest sand to use, and simple to, providing the bag has not been damaged or contaminated in anyway you can just tip it in! organic substrate is also really nice to use smells great and the ab crab store have a great value priced brick of it in that makes LOADS!! or you can mix both!

i think if you have used calci sand the sooner you change it the better really but they should be ok for a day or so on it til you can get it swapped, i'll go look for the calci sand thread for you Guests cannot see images in posts. Please register by clicking here to see images.

ha - argos, is there no problem you can't solve?

Thanks guys, I'll pick some up tomorrow and change it tomorrow night. I've got a 50/50 split of organic sub / sand - I'm not sure it is calci, but can't be sure it isn't either. It said nothing on the bag - it was just clear....(you might of guessed the pet shop weren't crab friendly....

thanks again.

Phew, checked with my sis, it's not calci-sand, but normal garden centre play sand! I'll still go to Argos and get some of the good stuff though.

Oh, and my brilliant "Hermit Crabs for Dummies" book does recommend Calci sand, but has a throw away warning saying "it can clump if wet"!! Don't trust the man, man.

..and thanks ZIPpy!! :14:
If you get stuck let me know as I am going to Bradford next weekend and I have 4 bags sitting in my cupboard for my new tank but its not getting any further on just yet and i have 6 buried any how. so let me know.
ok will do, cheers pd.

I'm still in the early stages, I've just got the tank up to 75f and proper humidity so I'll let them be. Might have a play at the weekend and check the sand situation.
I've reserved 2 bags of sand from argos to collect tomorrow too - just in case Guests cannot see images in posts. Please register by clicking here to see images.
